In today’s head-scratching fashion news comes a pair of Maison Margiela sneakers that look as though they’ve been ripped up by wild animals. And they have the internet in a frenzy. Why, you ask? Well, though we’re all about the vintage-inspired trend, adore jeans that have been deconstructed and reconstructed, and can even be convinced to get behind brand-new T-shirts with cutouts that look as though they’ve been moth-eaten, these particular kicks seem a little extreme. Although, it might have a lot to do with its hefty $1,425 price tag.

Looking as though it belongs in the age of Star Trek, these high tops boast an ankle strap, covered laces, and little embellishment to speak of. The minimalist design is the beauty of the piece. These alone, though, don’t come cheap: Ringing it at nearly $900 at most retailers. Then, this spring, the design house introduced what they are calling the “Future Destroyed High-Top Sneaker,” though destroyed might seem like an understatement. Neiman Marcus describes the style saying, “Maison Margiela deconstructs their ‘Future’ high-top sneaker with heavy distressing.”
These sneakers are, in fact, very on-brand for Maison Margiela, who has built its fashion house on the play that comes from the constant deconstruction and reconstruction of items; using something you already know and understand to create something entirely new and original. That said, Twitter seems to reject that artistic sentiment when it comes to this particular pair of sneakers.

One user writes, “This sneaker is going for $1,425. #Margiela. I’ll walk barefoot thanks.” Yet another questions, “The latest FASHION??” Many more share the sentiment, “Maison Margiela high-top sneaker takes the distressed look too far.”Art is fashion and fashion is art.
