7 Insane Things You Never Knew About Vikings

Vikings were some of the most brutal, talented warriors in all of time. Their conquests knew no bounds, and they would gladly rape and pillage their way across the world, as long as their boats were capable of reaching the intended target. Most people believe Vikings wore horned helmets, for example, but that is actually completely false. They had their own unique sets of armor, which stood out on the battlefield. Here are seven insane things the world has forgotten about the Vikings.

7. Clean People
Despite being known as brutal raiders, Vikings were actually an incredibly clean race of people. Archeological dig sites in their areas have discovered tweezers, razors, and even combs to keep themselves clean.

6. Bath Time
Keeping with being clean, Vikings also bathed at least once per week, which is far more than most European societies during the time period. Vikings were known for their long hair, so they certainly wanted it looking good.

5. Smolder
Vikings would often boil various items in urine to use for their fires, as the sodium nitrate within human urine would cause the felt from their fungus collecting to smolder instead of burn outright.

4. Boating
The highest honor a Viking could achieve was to be buried upon a boat. They believed this boat would sail them off into the afterlife, so they would be buried like royalty with their weapons and valuable goods.

3. Slavery
Enslaving those they raided was a huge part of their society. Vikings would try to capture as many slaves as they possible could while raiding Anglo-Saxon, Celtic, and Slavic villages throughout the area.

2. Marriage
Viking women tend to be married as young as the age of 12. They would start their own families soon after, ensuring the raiding parties and war bands had plenty of new recruits in time.

1. Freedoms
Women had a lot of freedom within the Viking society. They watched the household while the men were away, could own property, file for divorce, or reclaim a dowry from their husbands. Women were strong during this time.
