Convicted murder Stuart Horner has agreed to come down from the roof of Strangeways prison after a 60-hour protest
when prison officials apparently offered to give him a pizza and a can
of Coca-Cola. The prisoner had been protesting about conditions at the
facility and had previously said he intended to stay on the roof for 40
days and nights in an attempt to break the record for longest protest at
a prison in the UK.
Police and officials from the Manchester
facility had already been forced to move a large number of inmates after
Horner damaged windows and destroyed parts of the roof. They also had
to deploy extra officers to the prison when a crowd gathered to support
the protest.
Reports suggest that Horner ended his protest at
around 3am on Wednesday night. He was escorted down in a cherry picker
by two policemen in handcuffs while he shouted to those members of the
public who were looking on that he had been promised a pizza and a fizzy
drink if he cooperated.
