Having good teeth is rather important within society today, as it
symbolizes someone who can actually take care of themselves. At an early
age, we’re all taught to brush our teeth twice a day, a dentist will
take care of our teeth once or twice a year, and teeth whitening
services are on offer for anyone who drinks too much coffee, smokes, or
doesn’t take care of their teeth enough.
Unfortunately, it’s the
last service that appears to be causing problems these days. Teeth
whitening sounds like a godsend for some people, but research has
revealed that beauty salons are breaking the rules and offering the
service by people who aren’t trained, which ends up damaging the
customer’s teeth instead.
According to BBC, over 24 people have
been arrested for whitening teeth illegally, which causes the
aforementioned damage to people’s mouths. The General Dental Association
said: “The Dentists Act makes it illegal for anyone who is not a
dentist to give ‘treatment, advice or attendance’ that would usually be
given by a dentist. Handing an individual a tooth-whitening
tray and advising them on application, amongst other things, could
constitute the giving of ‘advice or attendance’ and would be illegal.”
A
lot of teeth whitening kits are unsafe, it appears. These are only safe
if they have less than 0.1 percent peroxide within them.
