Australia’s native animals are known for being dangerous and unforgiving. However, one Australian couple couldn’t help but intervene when they saw a snake was about to kill a tiny baby possum.
[post_ads]The couple had been out on a walk in Queensland and couldn’t help but stop and watch nature in action when they saw a snake eating an adult possum earlier this month. But as they watched, they noticed the possum’s pouch suddenly relaxed and a tiny baby possum fell out.

They couldn’t help but feel bad for the orphaned baby about to become the snake’s dessert, and quickly scooped him up, wrapped him up in a towel, and called rescuers from Wildcare Australia. [post_ads_2]“It’s horrible, it’s fascinating, but it’s nature,” Cathy Cope, a rescuer from Wildcare Australia, said about the baby who they named Georgie. “As mum died, her muscles relaxed, and out popped Georgie.”

Once rescuers arrived, baby Georgie was rushed to a nearby zoo to be examined. Thankfully, the snake hadn’t had a chance to do much harm to him. “Nothing was broken, just one puncture wound to his chest”, Cope said. Georgie has been treated with a round of antibiotics and has since grown from 210g to 283g. For now, Georgie’s home is a fake pouch, but once he weighs about 2.5 pounds, the team plans to release him back into the wild.
