The worst Oscar dresses of all time

The Oscars honor (mostly) Hollywood's best. But from bad to worst, these are the 10 most terrible movies to receive an Academy Award for best picture.

Blanca Blanco bared a bit too much in this garish red and white gown in 2018.

There are so many things wrong with this dress on Dakota Johnson in 2017. It's a lot of fabric, poorly cut, in a color that doesn't necessarily flatter her fair complexion.

The "South Park" crew (Trey Parker, left, Matt Stone and Marc Shaiman) questionably took notes from famous dresses worn by J. Lo and Gwyneth Paltrow in 2000.

Speaking of too sheer, Hilary Swank showed off a rare misstep with this pink gown with a see-through skirt in 2003.

In 1999, Celine Dion arrived in a questionable white backless suit.

Shiny, purple and waaay too much tulle. Tyra Banks called on the wrong designer friend to dress her in 2000.

Fringe and old-lady hair. What was Kate Hudson thinking in 2001?

No list would be complete without Cher's shockingly (at the time) nude getup from designer Bob Mackie in 1988.

Speaking of Gothic design disasters, this Elvira look did nothing for the gorgeous Angelina Jolie, who was still solidly in her punk phase in 2000.

It's the swan dress that launched a thousand memes! Bjork hit just about every worst-dressed list in 2001, when she showed up at the Oscars in the bird dress. Who else ended up in our "worst" hall of fame?

Gwyneth Paltrow has become a fashion staple at the Oscars, but 2002 was a rare Gothic misfire.

In 1997, Juliette Binoche won best supporting actress for "The English Patient." She deserved better than this merlot-hued, high-collared crushed velvet gown.

Heather Mills, then engaged to Paul McCartney, took the wrong approach in this two-piece lace gown in 2002.

Sophia Loren may be a legend, but her 2009 yellow dress was a fashion miss.

Rachel Griffiths thought a camera purse would distract us from this shiny bridesmaid's gown in 1999.

The look was so memorable that Ellen DeGeneres wore it as a gag while hosting the Emmy Awards later in the year.

Kim Basinger tried an avant garde look in 1990. It fell flat.

In 1992, Geena Davis took the princess look a bit too far.

Demi Moore in 1989: Yes, that's bike shorts, a bustle and a corset that you're seeing.

We could never figure out what the deal was with costume designer Lizzy Gardiner's 1995 Amex dress, made of gold cards. Maybe she needed the points?

In 2004, Uma Thurman rocked so. Much. Material.

2013: Um, this is the Oscars, aka the wrong event to put that much cleavage on display. Save it for Bravo, Brandi Glanville!
