38 year-old Theology teacher Jessica Hayes had an elaborate wedding
recently to marry the love of her life — Jesus Christ. Hayes, who lives
in Indiana, said that she made the decision to marry Christ after years
of prayer and soul-searching. So, on August 15, the bride, dressed in a
white, floor-length wedding gown and veil, tied the knot in a ceremony
witnessed by hundreds of people at the Cathedral of the Immaculate
Conception.
Strange as this may be, Hayes is not the only one to marry Christ, she
is actually part of an elite group known as the ‘consecrated virgins’ –
women who lead chaste lives, but are not required to live in convents or
obliged to work for the Catholic Church. There are reportedly 3,000
consecrated virgins in the world.
Jessica further explains her decision to go down this particular path, “This
is a vocation for women that feel that deeper call to spend their life
more in knowing Jesus and making that a public commitment in serving his
church, but are also called to live in the world.“
Although she plans to continue her normal life at home, she will not be
able to marry anyone else or have sex with anyone for the rest of her
life.
