A lot of people wear glasses or contact lenses these days, but many
people remove them before falling asleep each night. Unfortunately for
one teacher in Northern Ireland, he decided to leave his contact in
overnight. The next morning, the man awoke to excruciating pain.
The
teacher, Niall Dumigan, learned that wearing contact lenses has a
downside, even if you want to remove it. After leaving it in overnight,
the man developed an ulcer on his cornea. After removing the old pair,
he decided to insert a new pair, which only made things worse as the new
day went on. He decided thereon that he never wanted to experience
something like this again. He likened it to having his eyes ‘engulfed in
flames’.
The 28-year-old, who ended up on Channel 4’s ’24 Hours
in A&E’, admitted that he and his partnered had enjoyed a late night
at London’s Pride festival, and consumed a bit too much alcohol. He
said: “I was aware of the dangers associated with sleeping in your
contacts but I’d always thought, “Well, it can’t be that bad.” How wrong
I was. And it’s so easy to forget to take them out, especially when
you’ve had a drink”
The teacher has undergone laser eye surgery now to avoid anything going wrong in the future.
