8 Reasons For Adopting A Dog Right Now

By Lisbet Stuer-Lauridsen, BoredPanda

If you and your family are ready for a dog you have a very important choice to make. Will you buy him from a breeder or pet shop, or will you adopt? The arguments in favour of adoption are almost overwhelming here are just 8 of the most important reasons for adopting a dog.

8 Reasons for Adopting a Dog Right Now

1) You’ll get such a choice

Every possible breed is represented in UK dog shelters, so if you have your heart set on a specific breed you’ll be able to locate it. Equally, if you go to your local shelter you’ll meet tens of different dogs, pure bred and mixed who’re just waiting for their perfect human to arrive. Maybe you’ll choose your dog, maybe he’ll choose you, most likely you’ll just look at each other and know that it’s right.

2) Your dog will be temperament tested

Shelters are very aware of their responsibilities. Before rehoming a dog they evaluate them extensively. If you need a dog that’s good with children, good with other pets or have other specific needs, just say.

3) You’ll know what you’re getting

When you adopt an adult dog you know what size it is, what sort of coat it has and other important details. This is especially important if you’ve got your heart set on a mixed breed dog, otherwise known as a mutt or mongrel! Many owners will tell you that mongrels are the smartest and most loving dogs.

4) You’ll be rewarded with love and loyalty

Shelter dogs do know they’ve been rescued. They may be a bit timid and suspicious to start with, but once they’ve learned to trust you and their own good luck they will reward you with absolute adoration.

5) Your dog may already be trained

Many dogs in shelters are already house broken and understand some basic commands. That’s not to say that they might not be a bit unpredictable to start with, they’ve been though a rough time. But the basic hard work has been done and as they settle in you’ll see them bloom.

6) You’ll save money

You’ll pay an adoption fee but this will be far than you’d pay for a pure bred dog and that fee covers the vaccinations, chipping, spaying or neutering and other veterinary care that your new companion has already had.

7) And the money you do spend is going to a good cause

Your adoption fee will allow the shelter to help another dog. And you son’t risk putting money into the hands of unscrupulous owners of the puppy farms that contribute to the 50 000 dogs who end up in shelters in the UK every year.

8) You’ll be saving a life

Exact figures are impossible to collate because many shelters are independent and run on a shoestring. And they have better things to do with their resources than count up the number of dogs they have to euthanasia every year for no better reason than lack of a home. The best estimate is a heart-breaking 20 000 dogs in good health, of good nature who have to be destroyed because no one helps them. Make it one less…
